Compound fracture of jaw from gunshot wound. The left side of the upper and lower tang are marked '20754. The standard buttplate with "U.S." on top of the heel is barracks unit marked "B/302". E, 1st Regiment, Veteran Reserve Corps for November 1865: Cause of Disability. The upper tang is hand engraved with 'Remington Ilion NY USA/PAT MAY 3D NOV 15th 1864 APRIL 17th 1866.' The barrel is equipped with a Beach combination blade and globe front sight and a notch and folding ladder rear sight with adjustable peep and has '44 CTGE S' on the bottom. The forend is held on with two barrel bands both marked "U" on the right. The two line patent declaration of the early Rolling Block rifles reads REMINGTONS ILION N.Y.U.S.A. inspector proof of "P/ F.C.W." The barrel is 32-1/2 inch long, which is approximately 4 inches shorter than a regulation rifle with 12-1/2 inch pull over the buttstock. The left side of the receiver has the small naval acceptance proof of an anchor above the trigger guard. The top of the tang has the standard two-line Remington patent address of "REMINGTONS ILION N.Y. They were manufactured by Springfield Armory using the Remington action. It is estimated that only 498 were ever built and the survival rate is extremely low. This is a very rare, arsenal refinished, 1867 Navy contract Remington Rolling Block Cadet Rifle based on the original Navy contract rifles using a 1-1/2 rolling block action only built in a Cadet version for use at the naval academies.
